A RAINY DAY AT MOOR COTTAGE

Buried treasure, dating back over 1100 years, to the time of King Alfred The Great and the Anglo Saxon Kings, was found on The Cornwall Estate in 1774, but according to local legend, only half of it was ever found ... and therein lies a tale ...

The Coode family purchased the Estate in 1819, and in it’s grounds, built Moor Cottage as their family summer residence. Every summer young Gwendolyn Coode, who was born in 1873, took to signing and dating her name on the Estate’s stable walls.

She first made her mark aged 10 in 1883 and did so every year until the age of 17.  Skipping down the woodland path towards the stables on 14th August 1885, to sign her name, Gwendolyn could have had no idea of the adventure that awaited her that day ...

These historical facts inspired the fairy story  “A Rainy Day at Moor Cottage”, a children’s tale about the day some friendly Browneys came to the Cornwall Estate to warn Gwendolyn that some evil Spriggans were coming to steal the other half of The Trewhiddle Hoard ... an intriguing blend of fact and fiction ... which is which ?  You decide !

Exact copies of Gwendloyn’s dated signatures and drawings on the stable walls can be seen in The Gwendolyn Room in The White House ... you can even read the story on the bedroom ceiling !
