SURFING IN CORNWALL

With miles of superb coastline, Cornwall has plenty of opportunities to get surfing.  For serious surfers then it is probably the North Coast for you, but we do advise you get some expert advice before you attempt to surf, or contact one of the great surf schools for some expert tuition.

On the North Coast there are many great beaches around Bude, Crackington Haven, Trebarwith Strand and Polzeath for experts or Hayle and Perranprth are good beaches for learners.

Newquay is the home of British Surfing.  In Newquay there are beaches facing in all directions, and so a good spread of types of surf for all abilities.

There is a lot of surfing in the Newquay area, with consistent waves and a fantastic array of beaches to suit different tides, weather conditions and abilities.  Beaches include :

Watergate Bay - a good beach for novices.

Whipsiderry - not a beach for the novices as there is no lifeguard service, plus it can be cut off at high tide.

Porth - a big tidal range, so be prepared for a long walk out at low tide.  Very popular with bodyboarders and novices.

Lusty Glaze - some good swell , plus you'll also find the National Beach Lifeguard Training Centre here, so it is well patrolled.

Tolcarne - consistent surf all year round and popular with bodyboarders at high tide.

Great Western - gets consistent fun waves on all tidal ranges making it a great option for beginners.

Towan - the most protected of the Newquay beaches and so is popular with beginners.

North Fistral - good for surfing in all tides and is good for beginners, although can get very crowded in summer.

South Fistral - suitable for beginners, although you need to be careful of occasional dangerous rips.

The Cribber- recommended for experienced surfers only.

Crantock - suitable for beginners when the conditions are not too big, although there can be some dangerous rips.

Or more locally to The Cornwall, on the South Cornwall Coast, Pentewan Beach is just a few miles away and is  a very pretty location that is good for all abilities of surfer.
